Hydration in Midlife: The Simple Shift That Helps Support Your Changing Body

Hydration in Midlife: The Simple Shift That Helps Support Your Changing Body

Have you ever reached the end of the day and realized your water bottle is still sitting there…mostly full?
Or maybe your day looked something like this:
☕ Coffee in the morning
🥤 Maybe a drink with lunch
🏃‍♀️ Running from one thing to the next
😴 Feeling tired, foggy, or just "off" by the afternoon
And then you think…
"Why do I feel so exhausted?"
Now, there are many reasons we may feel tired, overwhelmed, or not quite like ourselves during perimenopause. Hormonal changes, stress, sleep challenges, and the many demands of midlife can all play a role.
But sometimes the simplest things are the easiest to overlook.
One of those things?
Hydration.
Water may not feel like a glamorous wellness strategy. It isn't a trendy supplement or a complicated routine.
But it is one of the most basic ways we can support our bodies every single day.
And during midlife, that support becomes even more important.

Your Body Runs on Water

Our bodies are made up of a significant amount of water, and nearly every system depends on proper hydration.
Water helps support:
💧 Blood circulation
💧 Digestion
💧 Temperature regulation
💧 Joint health
💧 Brain function
💧 Energy production
💧 Removal of waste from the body
Even mild dehydration can affect how we feel and function.
Research has connected inadequate hydration with things like changes in mood, fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. That "brain fog" many women experience during perimenopause may have many contributing factors, but hydration is one simple area worth paying attention to.
Sometimes the body is not asking for a complicated solution.
Sometimes it is asking for the basics.

Why Hydration Matters Even More During Midlife

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, our bodies are changing.
Hormones like estrogen influence many processes throughout the body, including fluid balance, temperature regulation, and the health of tissues that need moisture.
At the same time, aging naturally changes how our bodies manage hydration.
As we get older:
💧 Our sense of thirst may become less noticeable.
💧 Our bodies naturally hold less water.
💧 Our kidneys may not regulate fluid balance as efficiently as they once did.
This means we may not always get a strong "I'm thirsty" signal before our body needs more fluids.
Add in common midlife experiences like hot flashes, night sweats, busy schedules, increased stress, and changes in activity levels, and hydration can become even more important.

Your Nervous System Needs Support Too

One of the connections I find especially interesting is the relationship between hydration and our nervous system.
Your nervous system is constantly working behind the scenes to help your body respond to stress, regulate temperature, manage emotions, and keep everything balanced.
When your body is under stress, it requires more resources.
And dehydration can become another stressor your body has to manage.
Think of it this way:
Your body is like a phone running multiple apps at once.
Perimenopause, poor sleep, stress, busy schedules, and hormonal changes may already be using a lot of your body's "battery."
Hydration is one simple way to help provide the resources your body needs to keep functioning well.
Supporting your nervous system is not always about adding another task to your day.
Sometimes it is about giving your body what it needs to feel supported.

Could Dehydration Be Affecting How You Feel?

Thirst is not always the first sign that your body needs more fluids.
Some signs of dehydration may include:
💧 Headaches
💧 Fatigue
💧 Brain fog
💧 Dry mouth
💧 Dry skin
💧 Dark-colored urine
💧 Constipation
💧 Feeling overheated more easily
💧 Muscle cramps
💧 Feeling generally "off"
Of course, these symptoms can have many causes—especially during perimenopause.
Your body is communicating with you, but it is important to remember that symptoms are often pieces of a bigger picture.
If you are experiencing a symptom that concerns you or feels unusual, it is always a good idea to connect with your healthcare provider.

So...How Much Water Do You Actually Need?

This is where things can get confusing.
You may have heard the advice to drink eight glasses of water a day. You may have heard you need a gallon. You may have heard completely different advice online.
The truth?
Your hydration needs are personal.
Factors that influence your needs include:
💧 Your activity level
💧 The climate where you live
💧 Your body size
💧 Your diet
💧 Medications
💧 Your overall health
Instead of focusing on a perfect number, I encourage you to start with awareness.
Because awareness always comes before change.

Your Small Shift This Week: Just Notice

Before you try to dramatically increase your water intake, take one simple step.
Track what you are already drinking.
For one week, simply notice:
💧 How much water are you currently drinking?
💧 When do you usually drink it?
💧 When do you tend to forget?
💧 How does your body feel on days when you drink more?
💧 What is the color of your urine?
No judgment.
No perfection.
No need to suddenly carry around a gallon jug everywhere you go.
Just curiosity.
Because sometimes the first step toward supporting your body is simply paying attention.

Your Body Is Worth Supporting

Midlife brings so many changes, and it can be tempting to look for the next big solution.
But often, the small foundational habits are where we create the biggest impact over time.
Hydration may seem simple, but simple does not mean insignificant.
Every sip is a small way of telling your body:
"I am listening."
"I am paying attention."
"I am supporting you through this season."
And remember…
Something is almost always better than nothing.
A few extra sips today count. 💛

Meet Coach Jaime

Let me introduce myself!
My name is Jaime. I am a Christian wife and mom to 2 humans and 2 furry children. After being a middle school teacher for 17 years, I switched directions to go into the field of health and wellness. I am a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, I also have certifications in aromatherapy and menopause coaching. Beyond my passion for health and wellness, you can catch me walking, baking, scrapbooking or sewing.

In the midst of my teaching career, I started to experience a lot of health concerns. My hormones were tanking and I felt terrible. I jumped from doctor to doctor with each one prescribing a new medication that didn't seem to help. I had a full hysterectomy at the age of 39 which threw me into menopause. With little help or guidance from doctors, I started doing my own research which lead to me becoming a health coach. (I guess "rabbit holes" can have benefits!!) I am proud to say that I am stronger and healthier than I have ever been!
My health journey hasn't been easy, but it has been a learning experience that I am grateful for!

I don't want women to have to go through their perimenopause/menopause journey alone and confused, like I did. I don't want women to feel like they have no options. I don't want women to learn the hard way the things that really make a difference for their health. I want women to have the knowledge, support, tools and confidence to take control of their health.

If you are in perimenopause or post menopausal, I want to support, encourage, and empower you during this time. This is not a time for suffering, rather it is a time for powerful change!!
