
When You Want to Hide in a Blanket Fort, Maybe Your Body Is Asking for Connection
Have you ever had one of those days?
You know the kind.
Everything feels like too much.
The noise is too loud.
The questions are too many.
Your patience has apparently left the building. 😂
And the tiniest little inconvenience feels like the final straw.

And you're thinking…

Please just leave me alone.
Your natural response might be to retreat.
Find your favorite blanket.
Put on comfy clothes.
Turn off your phone.
Avoid people.
Maybe build yourself a nice little blanket fort and declare yourself unavailable until further notice.

Honestly?
Sometimes a little alone time is exactly what you need.
But what if there are other times when that urge to retreat is actually a clue?
What if, underneath all that overwhelm, your body isn't asking for less connection…
but more?
Enter a hormone we don't talk about nearly enough: 🌸 Oxytocin.
Meet Your Connection Hormone
You've probably heard oxytocin called the “love hormone” or “cuddle hormone.”
And while those names aren't completely wrong, oxytocin is much more interesting than a hormone that simply shows up when you're hugging someone.
Oxytocin is a hormone and neuropeptide produced primarily in the hypothalamus, a small but incredibly important part of your brain. From there, it can be released into the bloodstream through the posterior pituitary and also act within the brain.
It has some very well-established jobs.
Oxytocin plays an important role in:
- Labor and uterine contractions
- Milk release during breastfeeding
- Sexual function and reproduction
- Social bonding and attachment
- Social behavior and connection
- Stress regulation
- Mood and emotional responses
And researchers are continuing to study its possible roles in things like sleep, metabolism, bone health, cardiovascular health, and healthy aging.
In other words…
Oxytocin isn't just about babies and romantic relationships.
It is part of a much bigger system involved in how we connect with ourselves, other people, and our environment.
And that makes it especially interesting during midlife.
What Happens to Oxytocin During Menopause?
Here's where things get really interesting.
As we age, estrogen levels decline—and research suggests that oxytocin signaling may also change during reproductive aging.
A 2024 review looking specifically at oxytocin and women's health in midlife found that oxytocin levels appear to decrease during the transition into menopause, while also emphasizing that human research is still limited and that measuring oxytocin accurately is challenging.
Why does estrogen matter?
Estrogen appears to influence the oxytocin system, including the expression of oxytocin and its receptors. So when estrogen changes during perimenopause and menopause, it may also influence how the oxytocin system functions.
Now, before you start thinking…
“Aha! My oxytocin is low. That's why I feel like this!”
Hold up. 😂
We can't make that leap.
Oxytocin is released in pulses, levels can change quickly, and measuring oxytocin in the blood doesn't necessarily tell us what's happening with oxytocin activity in the brain. Researchers themselves caution that the human evidence is still inconclusive.
So we're not going to diagnose your oxytocin levels from how cranky you were when someone asked you where the scissors are.
But we can look at what this hormone does and consider how connection, social support, touch, and other positive experiences may support the systems involved in stress regulation and well-being.
What Might Lower Oxytocin Signaling Look Like?
There isn't a simple checklist of “low oxytocin symptoms.”
But because oxytocin is involved in social connection, stress responses, mood, and other systems, researchers are interested in its relationship with things like:
- Social withdrawal
- Feelings of loneliness or disconnection
- Mood changes
- Stress responses
- Anxiety
- Sleep
- Changes in social behavior
Again, these experiences can have many different causes, especially during perimenopause and menopause.
Your changing hormones, sleep, stress, relationships, life circumstances, nervous system, and overall health can all influence how you feel.
So rather than asking:
“How do I increase my oxytocin?”
I like a slightly different question:
“How can I create more opportunities for connection in my life?”
Because here's where oxytocin gets really interesting.
Oxytocin and Cortisol: Your Stress + Connection Team
We've spent a lot of time talking about cortisol.
And for good reason.
Cortisol is part of your body's stress-response system. It helps you respond when life throws something at you.
Oxytocin is involved in some of the systems that help you connect, seek support, and respond to stress.
And research has found some fascinating connections between the two.
In one human study, people who received social support during a stressful experience had lower cortisol responses. When social support and oxytocin were combined, researchers observed the lowest cortisol levels and greater calmness compared with the other groups.
Other research has also found that social support can reduce stress responses, although the relationship between oxytocin and cortisol is not simple or one-directional. In fact, some studies have found different patterns, which is one reason researchers are still working to understand exactly how this system works.
So I don't want you walking away thinking:
“Oxytocin lowers cortisol. Therefore, I need to get my oxytocin up!”
Bodies are much more complicated than that.
Instead, think about the bigger picture:
Connection can be a powerful part of how we experience and recover from stress.
And oxytocin may be one of the biological systems involved.
Maybe Your “Leave Me Alone” Feeling Is Worth Exploring
Here's the part I really want you to think about.
When you're overwhelmed, your first instinct might be:
Pull away.
And sometimes?
Do it.
Take the shower.
Go for the walk.
Read your book.
Put on the pajamas.
Build the blanket fort.
Take some quiet time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with needing solitude.
But what if you notice that you've been retreating a lot?
What if you've been saying no to invitations, avoiding phone calls, isolating yourself, or keeping everyone at arm's length because you're exhausted and overwhelmed?
Maybe that's an invitation to get curious.
Because sometimes when we're stressed, we assume we need to disconnect when what our bodies may actually benefit from is safe connection.
Not a crowded room full of people.
Not another obligation.
Not being “on.”
Just connection.
A conversation with someone who gets it.
A hug.
Sitting beside your spouse while you watch your favorite show.
Laughing with a friend.
Petting your dog.
Going to your book club.
Taking a walk with your sister.
Sitting outside with a neighbor.
Joining a community where you don't have to explain yourself.
Sometimes the answer isn't:
“How do I escape everyone?”
It might be:
“Who helps me feel like I don't have to carry everything alone?”
So… How Do We Support Our Oxytocin System?
Here's the good news.
You don't need an oxytocin supplement.
You don't need to buy an expensive gadget.
And you certainly don't need to turn connection into another item on your wellness to-do list. 😂
Instead, look for simple opportunities to experience connection, pleasure, safety, kindness, and positive interaction.
🤗 Get Some Touch
A hug from someone you trust.
Holding hands.
A massage.
Cuddling with your partner.
A gentle touch on your arm.
Even pleasant, affectionate touch can interact with the oxytocin system. Research on social touch continues to show interesting relationships between pleasant touch, oxytocin, and social bonding.
And if you're not a touchy-feely person?
That's okay.
Connection doesn't require hugs.
🐾 Spend Time With Your Pet
There is something about sitting down with a furry friend who has absolutely no interest in your productivity level that can be pretty wonderful.
Research on human-animal relationships suggests oxytocin pathways may play a role in the bond between people and companion animals, although the findings aren't as simple as “pet your dog = oxytocin increases.”
So enjoy the snuggles because they feel good—not because you have to manufacture a hormone response.
🎶 Turn Up the Music
Music can create emotion, connection, memories, joy, and even a sense of belonging.
A recent systematic review examining music and the oxytocin system found evidence suggesting that individual and group musical activities may influence social bonding and emotion regulation, although researchers noted that more high-quality research is needed.
So crank up the song that makes you want to dance around your kitchen.
Or put on the playlist that takes you straight back to high school.
Yes, even that one.
💕 Do Something Kind
Connection isn't always about receiving.
Sometimes it's about giving.
Send the text.
Check on a friend.
Buy someone's coffee.
Write a thank-you note.
Help a neighbor.
Donate.
Volunteer.
Research has connected oxytocin with prosocial behaviors such as generosity and empathy, although much of the experimental research has involved administered oxytocin rather than everyday acts of kindness, so we shouldn't oversell the finding.
Still, kindness has a pretty good track record for making us feel more connected to other humans.
That's reason enough to try it.
🫶 Find Your People
This one might be the biggest.
Humans are social creatures.
We need people.
Not all the people.
Not constant socializing.
But your people.
The ones you can laugh with.
The ones you can text, “Today is NOT IT,” without needing a 14-paragraph explanation.
The ones who remind you that you're not the only person going through this weird, wonderful, frustrating season of life.
Social support has been shown to buffer stress responses in research, and oxytocin appears to be one piece of the complicated biology involved in those interactions.
🧘♀️ Practice Mindfulness
Slowing down and paying attention to what you're experiencing can also support connection with yourself.
One small study found that a brief mindfulness session improved mood and reduced anxiety while also increasing salivary oxytocin in psychology students.
The study was small, so this isn't proof that meditation is an “oxytocin hack.”
But I love the bigger message:
You can create moments of connection without another person in the room.
Connection with yourself counts, too.
😂 Do Things That Bring You Joy
Dance.
Garden.
Paint.
Bake.
Read.
Sing terribly in the car.
Go outside.
Play with your grandchildren.
Watch the movie you've seen 47 times.
Laugh until your stomach hurts.
Do something simply because you enjoy it.
Joy doesn't have to be productive to be valuable.
Your Small Shift This Week
Here's my challenge for you.
The next time you notice yourself feeling:
overwhelmed…
irritable…
on edge…
touched out…
or like you want to disappear into your blanket fort…

Pause.
Take a breath.
And ask yourself:
“Do I need solitude right now… or do I need connection?”
Maybe the answer really is solitude.
That's okay.
But maybe you'll realize what you actually need is to call your best friend.
Sit with your partner.
Cuddle your dog.
Go meet someone for coffee.
Join the conversation instead of scrolling past it.
Give someone a hug.
Or simply step outside and do something that makes you feel like you again.
Because sometimes the thing that feels hardest when we're stressed—reaching out—may be one of the things that helps us feel supported.
And maybe that little urge to hide isn't something you have to judge.
Maybe it's simply information.
A chance to pause.
Get curious.
And ask your body:
“What do you need right now?”
Sometimes the answer is a blanket fort.
And sometimes…
it's a little more connection. 💕
🌸 A Final Reminder
Oxytocin is fascinating, but it isn't a magic hormone.
You don't need to obsess over your oxytocin levels, and there isn't a simple blood test that can tell you whether you have “enough.” The science around oxytocin in midlife is promising but still developing, particularly in women going through menopause.
What we can do is pay attention to the things that help us feel connected, supported, safe, joyful, and cared for.
Because those things matter.
And maybe that's the bigger lesson oxytocin has to teach us:
We were never meant to do all of this alone.
