The Stories We Tell Ourselves About Perimenopause (And Why They Matter)

The Stories We Tell Ourselves About Perimenopause (And Why They Matter)

🌸 The Stories We Walk Into This Season With

Before most women ever experience their first hot flash, mood swing, or skipped cycle…
We’ve already been told a story about menopause.
Maybe it sounded like:
👉 “It’s all downhill from here.”
👉 “Just wait until menopause…”
👉 “Weight gain is inevitable.”
👉 “You’ll never sleep again.”
👉 “This is just part of getting older.”
Or maybe the message was less direct, but still deeply absorbed:
That midlife means:
• slowing down
• fading into the background
• accepting discomfort
• losing yourself in the process
So when symptoms begin to show up during perimenopause…
Many women unknowingly enter this season already expecting it to be miserable.

🌿 The Problem with Preconceived Stories

The stories we believe about perimenopause matter.
Because they influence:
✨ how we interpret symptoms
✨ how we care for ourselves
✨ what we believe is possible
✨ whether we seek support
✨ how much hope we carry into this season
If you believe:
👉 “Nothing will help anyway…”
You may stop trying.
If you believe:
👉 “This is just what happens to women…”
You may ignore symptoms that deserve support and attention.
If you believe:
👉 “I’m just falling apart…”
You may start treating yourself with frustration instead of compassion.

🌸 What Is a Limiting Belief?

A limiting belief is a thought or belief that restricts what you believe is possible for yourself.
It often sounds like:
❌ “I’ll never be consistent.”
❌ “It’s too late for me.”
❌ “Nothing works for my body anymore.”
❌ “I just have to survive this.”
❌ “I’m too exhausted to change anything.”
And the tricky part?
Many limiting beliefs feel like facts.
But often…
👉 they’re stories we’ve repeated so many times that they feel true.

🌿 Where Limiting Beliefs Come From

Limiting beliefs can develop from many places, including:
• family messages
• societal expectations
• diet culture
• past experiences
• fear or disappointment
• social media
• other people’s menopause stories
And during perimenopause, these beliefs can become even louder.

🌸 Why Limiting Beliefs Can Feel Stronger During Perimenopause

Perimenopause is a season of change—and change can feel vulnerable.
When your body feels unfamiliar…
When symptoms impact your confidence…
When your energy shifts…
👉 fear and self-doubt can creep in more easily.
Add in:
• hormonal fluctuations
• stress
• poor sleep
• mental overload
…and it becomes much easier to fall into negative thinking patterns.
Especially if you’re already overwhelmed.

🌿 Why We Don’t Want to Hold Onto Limiting Beliefs

Because limiting beliefs don’t just affect our mindset…
👉 they affect our actions.
If you believe:
❌ “I’ll never stick with anything…”
You may stop trying after one hard day.
If you believe:
❌ “Nothing helps…”
You may miss opportunities that could genuinely support your health.
If you believe:
❌ “This is just part of aging…”
You may settle for surviving instead of learning how to thrive.

🌸 How to Spot a Limiting Belief

One of the easiest ways to identify limiting beliefs is to listen to your internal dialogue.
Pay attention to thoughts that sound like:
• “I always…”
• “I never…”
• “I can’t…”
• “There’s no point…”
• “This is just who I am…”
These statements are often clues.
Another helpful question to ask yourself:
👉 Would I say this to someone I love?
If the answer is no…
It may be time to challenge that thought.

🌿 How to Start Working Through Limiting Beliefs

You do not need to instantly become wildly confident or positive.
This is not about pretending everything is easy.
It’s about creating a little space between:
👉 you
and
👉 the story you’ve been telling yourself

💛 Get Curious Instead of Judgmental

Instead of:
❌ “Why can’t I get it together?”
Try:
💛 “Where did this belief come from?”
Or:
💛 “Is this belief actually helping me?”
Curiosity opens the door to growth.
Judgment usually shuts it.

💛 Look for Evidence Against the Belief

If your belief is:
👉 “I’m never consistent”
Ask yourself:
• Have there been times I have shown consistency?
• What counts as consistency for me right now?
Sometimes we overlook progress because it doesn’t look perfect.

💛 Reframe the Story

You don’t have to jump from:
❌ “Everything is hopeless”
To:
✨ “Everything is amazing!”
Instead, aim for something more supportive and realistic.
Examples:
❌ “Nothing works for me.”
➡ 💛 “I’m still learning what supports my body.”
❌ “I’m failing.”
➡ 💛 “My body’s needs are changing.”
❌ “It’s too late.”
➡ 💛 “Small changes still matter.”

💛 Surround Yourself with Supportive Voices

The messages you consume matter.
If you constantly hear:
👉 fear
👉 hopelessness
👉 shame
…it becomes harder to believe positive change is possible.
Seek out:
✨ education
✨ encouragement
✨ supportive communities
✨ realistic conversations

💛 Focus on Small Wins

Limiting beliefs often shift through experience—not perfection.
Every small step helps build evidence that:
👉 change IS possible

🌸 A New Story Is Possible

Perimenopause is not the end of your health story.
It is not proof that your body has betrayed you.
And it does not mean you are powerless.
This season may invite you to:
✨ slow down
✨ reevaluate
✨ support yourself differently
But that doesn’t mean your best days are behind you.

🌿 A Gentle Reminder

You do not have to believe every thought you think.
And just because you’ve carried a story for a long time…
👉 doesn’t mean it has to define your future

Meet Coach Jaime

Let me introduce myself!
My name is Jaime. I am a Christian wife and mom to 2 humans and 2 furry children. After being a middle school teacher for 17 years, I switched directions to go into the field of health and wellness. I am a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, I also have certifications in aromatherapy and menopause coaching. Beyond my passion for health and wellness, you can catch me walking, baking, scrapbooking or sewing.

In the midst of my teaching career, I started to experience a lot of health concerns. My hormones were tanking and I felt terrible. I jumped from doctor to doctor with each one prescribing a new medication that didn't seem to help. I had a full hysterectomy at the age of 39 which threw me into menopause. With little help or guidance from doctors, I started doing my own research which lead to me becoming a health coach. (I guess "rabbit holes" can have benefits!!) I am proud to say that I am stronger and healthier than I have ever been!
My health journey hasn't been easy, but it has been a learning experience that I am grateful for!

I don't want women to have to go through their perimenopause/menopause journey alone and confused, like I did. I don't want women to feel like they have no options. I don't want women to learn the hard way the things that really make a difference for their health. I want women to have the knowledge, support, tools and confidence to take control of their health.

If you are in perimenopause or post menopausal, I want to support, encourage, and empower you during this time. This is not a time for suffering, rather it is a time for powerful change!!
